PROBLEM

The Filter option is unavailable in ArcGIS Online Map Viewer

Last Published: July 13, 2021

Description

In ArcGIS Online Map Viewer or Map Viewer Classic, when attempting to apply a filter to a feature layer in a web map, the Filter option is not available, as shown in the images below.

In Map Viewer

In ArcGIS Online Map Viewer, when selecting the feature layer, there few options display on the right panel, which are Properties, Filter, Clustering, and Labels where Filter option is not available.

In Map Viewer Classic

In ArcGIS Online Map Viewer Classic, when browsing to the feature layer in the Contents pane, there few icons display which are Show Legend, Show Table, Change Style, Cluster Points, and Perform Analysis but the Filter icon is not displayed.

Cause

This issue occurs when the feature layer in the web map is not hosted on ArcGIS Online. For example, feature collections such as CSV files, shapefiles, or map notes added to the web map using the Add Content to Map option in Map Viewer Classic are not added as hosted feature layers. The Filter option is not supported for non-hosted layers. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Create filters for more information.

Solution or Workaround

To resolve the issue, publish the file or layer as a hosted feature layer in ArcGIS Online.

In Map Viewer

  1. Log in to ArcGIS Online with privileges to publish hosted feature layers.
  2. In Map Viewer, remove the non-hosted layer in the web map. Refer ArcGIS Online: Manage and organize layers to remove the layer.
  3. In the ArcGIS Online page, click Content > My Content, and publish the file or layer as a hosted feature layer. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Publish hosted feature layers for steps to do this.

The published hosted feature layer named as datacharacters_hosted is listed in My Content as Feature Layer (hosted).

  1. Open the web map in Map Viewer and add the hosted feature layer to the web map. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Add layers to maps (Map Viewer) for steps to do this.

On the left panel, on the Layers tab, in the Add layer pane, under the My Content drop-down list, there are list of feature layer and hosted feature layer. Select the published hosted feature layer, and click the Add icon beside the layer.
