The Extent Indicator button is disabled in ArcGIS Pro

Description

In ArcGIS Pro, the Extent Indicator button in the Map Frames group on the top ribbon is disabled when attempting to add the extent indicator to the page layout.

Cause

  • This is by design. Extent indicators require at least two map frames with one frame containing the extent indicator and the other, the extent to be displayed. The Extent Indicator button is disabled until at least two or more 2D map frames are added to the page layout.
  • The page layout is corrupted.

Solution or Workaround

Choose one of the options below depending on the cause to resolve the issue.

Add map frames to the page layout

In ArcGIS Pro, add at least two 2D map frames to the page layout. Refer to How To: Set up a page layout with multiple map frames that reference the same data for steps to do so.

Create a new page layout

In ArcGIS Pro, create a new layout, and add the map frames to enable the Extent Indicator button.
