PROBLEM

The custom point symbology of a hosted feature layer does not display in ArcGIS Online

Last Published: January 14, 2021

Description

In ArcGIS Online, when viewing a hosted feature layer with custom point symbology published from ArcMap, the custom point symbols do not display or the symbols appear generalized.

Cause

Symbology from custom style reference files in ArcMap is not always supported in ArcGIS Online. Based on ArcGIS Online: Troubleshoot, some symbols may be downgraded when published to ArcGIS Online because web browsers cannot display some of the more complex cartographic symbology.

Solution or Workaround

Perform the following steps to resolve the issue.

  1. Open the hosted feature layer in ArcGIS Pro. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Add a web feature layer for editing for more information.
  2. Import the .style file of the custom symbology to a .stylx file in ArcGIS Pro. To do so, follow the instructions in ArcGIS Pro: Import a desktop style into the project. The imported .stylx file is listed in the Catalog pane > Styles.
  3. Update the symbology of the points using the symbols contained in the style file imported in Step 2. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Find symbols for more information.
  4. Republish or overwrite the feature layer to ArcGIS Online. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Share a web feature layer using the default configuration and ArcGIS Pro: Overwrite a web feature layer for more information.
