PROBLEM

Text sketch label sizes are not adjusted across map extents in ArcGIS Online Map Viewer

Last Published: March 10, 2025

Description

In ArcGIS Online Map Viewer, the sizes of text sketch features used as labels on a web map do not dynamically adjust to changes in the map extent. As a result, when zooming in and out, the text size remains static and appears disproportionately large or small, obscuring underlying features and reducing map readability.

Cause

Text sketch features are not scale-dependent. Unlike labels, which can be configured to adjust their sizes based on scale, text sketch sizes are static on the map regardless of zoom level.

Solution or Workaround

The alternative workflow for adjusting the sketch layer based on zoom level is to duplicate the layers and configure the size and visibility range to vary with the map extent. The following workflow describes the steps to achieve this.

  1. Open the web map with the text sketch features in ArcGIS Online Map Viewer.
  2. Configure the properties of the existing sketch layer.
    1. Set the layer visibility range. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Set the visible range for instructions.
    2. Specify the preferred font size of the text sketch features for the current map extent. Refer to the last step in ArcGIS Online: Add text for instructions.
  3. Duplicate the original text sketch layer.
    1. In the Layers pane, click the existing text sketch layer.
    2. In the Properties pane, under Sketch features, check the check boxes for the features to be copied.
    3. In the Actions dialog box, click Copy to new Sketch layer.
  4. In the Layers pane, select the duplicated sketch layer and repeat Step 2 to configure the layer properties to display the text sketch features at a different zoom level. Set a different visibility range and specify a custom label size as preferred.
