PROBLEM

Slow performance when editing shapefiles in ArcGIS Pro

Last Published: August 13, 2024

Description

When editing shapefiles, the ArcGIS Pro performance is slow and it takes a while to process actions made in the project.

Cause

  • The shapefile is stored on a network drive. Although network drives are convenient for shared access, they can lead to poor performance due to their reliance on network connections for accessing and transferring data, especially when multiple users are accessing the data simultaneously.
  • Shapefiles are not the optimal format for editing in ArcGIS Pro. Shapefiles have more limitations compared to feature classes stored in a geodatabase. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Geoprocessing considerations for shapefile output for more information.

Solution or Workaround

Save the shapefile to a local drive

Copy or move the shapefile from the network drive to a local drive. In ArcGIS Pro, connect to the folder containing the shapefile and use the shapefile from the local drive.

Convert the shapefile to a feature class

Convert the shapefile to a feature class in ArcGIS Pro. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Export a shapefile for more information.
