PROBLEM

Slow performance issues in ArcGIS Pro when there is a large number of layout elements

Last Published: February 11, 2021

Description

It is possible to create and add layouts to projects in ArcGIS Pro. In some instances, using a layout with a large number of layout elements results in slow waiting time after each pan or zoom of the layout, which interrupts workflow.

Cause

There are several reasons for this issue. Refer to Problem: Rendering and drawing performance issues in ArcGIS Pro 2.0 and above for more information. Additionally, the following are possible causes related to a large number of layout elements in ArcGIS Pro:

  • The text uses a halo with a complex fill, an outline, or a transparency setting.
  • The symbols are too complex.
  • The map series is enabled.
  • The ArcGIS Pro project is saved on a network drive.
  • ArcGIS Pro is outdated.

Solution or Workaround

Depending on the cause, follow one of the workarounds below to resolve the issue.

Note:
To maintain optimal drawing performance when using labels, refer to ArcMap: Labels.

Remove the halo from the text

  1. In ArcGIS Pro, open the layout, and click the element to open the Element pane.
  2. In the Format Text window, click the drop-down list, and select Text.
  3. Click Text Symbol, and click Halo.
  4. Click the Halo symbol drop-down list, and select the No polygon symbol Image showing the No polygon symbol. box .
  5. Click Apply.

Disable the map series

Disable the map series. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Enable a map series for steps to do this.

Save the project locally

Save the project locally. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Save a copy of the current project file with a new name and follow the steps provided in the document, but in Step 4, instead of the network drive, select a location on the local drive.

Update ArcGIS Pro

Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Update ArcGIS Pro for more information and steps to update to the latest version.
