PROBLEM

Raster band names renamed in the Catalog pane are not reflected when added to a mosaic dataset in ArcGIS Pro

Last Published: March 3, 2022

Description

In ArcGIS Pro, rasters contain one or more individual layers called bands which are combined to create a natural-looking image on a map. The band names can be customized to display information in an ArcGIS Pro project. However, raster band names renamed in the Catalog pane are not reflected when the raster is added to a mosaic dataset.

In this example, the first two bands of a raster file are renamed to '1' and '2' in the Catalog pane, but the bands are displayed as 'Band 1' and 'Band 2' in the Contents pane and the legend when the raster file is added to a mosaic dataset.

In the Catalog pane, under Folders, the first and second band of a raster file is renamed to 1 and 2.
The names of the two bands are not reflected in the Contents pane and in the legend added to the layout. The bands are displayed as Band 1 and Band 2.

Cause

Renaming the band names in the Catalog pane does not change the band names in the raster's metadata file. Most imagery comes with a metadata file that provides information such as the sensor name, band names, or cloud cover associated with the imagery. ArcGIS Pro reads the metadata file and compiles all the bands into layers to display the imagery in a project. The band names are displayed according to the data in the raster's metadata file.

Solution or Workaround

Follow the workflow below to resolve the issue.

  1. In ArcGIS Pro, in the Catalog pane, right-click the database, navigate to New, and select Mosaic Dataset.
Access the Create Mosaic Dataset tool by navigating to the Catalog pane, right-click the database, navigate to New and select Mosaic Dataset.
  1. Configure the parameters in the Create Mosaic Dataset pane to create a new mosaic dataset.
    1. For Mosaic Dataset Name, type a name for the dataset. In this example, the name of the mosaic dataset is TestCustom.
    2. Expand Product Properties.
    3. Under Product Band Definitions, for Band Name, type a name for the band name.
    4. Click Add another, and repeat Step 2(c) to customize the name for another band. In this example, the custom names of the bands are AA, BB, and CC.
    5. Click Run. The mosaic dataset is added to the project.
In the Create Mosaic Dataset pane, typea name for Mosaic Dataset Name (Step 2a). Click to expand Product Properties (Step 2b) and type and custom name for the band for Band Name (Step 2c). Click Add another to customize the name for another band. The function contains a plus icon (Step 2d). Click Run at the bottom-right corner of the pane to generate a new mosaic dataset (Step 2e).
  1. Add the raster to the mosaic dataset.
    1. In the Catalog pane, right-click the new mosaic dataset. Click Add Rasters....
Access the Add Rasters To Mosaic Dataset tool by navigating to the Catalog pane, and right-click the new mosaic dataset, select Add Rasters....
  1. In the Add Rasters To Mosaic Dataset tool pane, on the Parameters tab, select the appropriate raster type from the Raster Type drop-down list.
  2. For Input Data, click the Browse The Browse icon symbol. icon to select the rasters.
  3. Click Run.
In the Add Rasters To Mosaic Dataset pane, select the appropriate raster type for Raster Type (step 3b). Under Input Data, click the Browse icon on the right side to select the raster file (Step 3c). Click Run at the bottom-right corner of the pane to add the raster file to the mosaic dataset (Step 3d).

The raster is added to the mosaic dataset, and the bands are populated with the customized band names. The customized band names are displayed in the Contents pane and the legend.

The customized band names are displayed in the Contents pane and in the legend added to the layout. The band names are displayed as AA, BB, and CC.
