PROBLEM

Polygon fills bleed over or fill entire page when printing or exporting

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

Polygon fills bleed over or fill entire page when printing or exporting.
[O-image] Example of bleeding polygons

Cause

Data layer with the polygon fill has broken geometry, which is causing the fill symbology to bleed when printed or exported.

Solution or Workaround

Check and repair the geometry.

  1. Verify that there is broken geometry by running the Check Geometry tool, available from ArcToolbox > Data Management Tools > Features > Check Geometry. View the resultant .DBF table; if the table contains any data, then there is broken geometry in the data layer.
  2. Run the Repair Geometry tool, available from ArcToolbox > Data Management Tools > Features > Repair Geometry.

    Note:
Repair Geometry overwrites the existing data, so it is recommended to make a copy of the original data and run the Repair Geometry on the copy. If you make a copy, be sure to change of source of the layer in ArcMap to the new repaired copy before printing or exporting again.
