PROBLEM

Mosaic dataset overview displays Partial Overview in Category field in ArcGIS Pro

Last Published: November 19, 2025

Description

In ArcGIS Pro, mosaic dataset overviews are low-resolution representations of imagery designed to enhance display performance and enable quick visualization at smaller scales. In some cases, using the Build Overviews tool to generate overviews for a mosaic dataset may render the task incomplete. This incomplete state is reflected in the mosaic dataset's attribute table, where the Category field displays Partial Overview, indicating that some overview tiles were successfully built while others remain incomplete, as shown in the image below.

The Category field displays Partial Overview

Cause

  • Differences in the size, extent, and source of imagery within a mosaic dataset during overview generation.
  • Interrupted or incomplete initial overview generation. The Build Overviews task stops prematurely or encounters errors during execution.

Solution or Workaround

Note:
The workflow below requires the ArcGIS Pro Standard or Advanced license.

Rebuild the overviews to ensure all areas of the mosaic dataset are properly represented. Refer to How To: Generate mosaic dataset overviews in ArcGIS Pro for instructions. In the Define Overviews pane, expand the Overview Tile Parameters node and set the Number Of Levels parameter to -1. This setting automatically determines the optimal number of overview levels based on the resolution of the source imagery, the size and extent of the dataset, and the mosaic dataset’s pyramid structure.
