PROBLEM

Memory issues with ArcIMS Author, ArcExplorer-Java Edition and MapObjects-Java Edition

When you successively open and close different datasets within applications that are based on MapObjects—Java Edition, such as ArcIMS Author or ArcExplorer—Java Edition, the resources used by those datasets may not be released.

Cause

If the dataset used is of type image, then the resources consumed can be considerable, owing to the use of Java Advanced Imaging, which maintains a separate cache of imagery.

If the dataset is of type shapefile, the the resources consumed include an in-memory cache of features, which is limited by a memory parameter specified in the resource property file named cache.properties. Note that if you modify the cache size specified there, then it is possible to negatively affect display performance of shapefiles as a result.

Solution or Workaround

Exit ArcIMS Author or ArcExplorer-Java Edition to free the resources.
