PROBLEM

Limited display of embedded PDF files in ArcGIS StoryMaps

Last Published: March 17, 2026

Description

In ArcGIS StoryMaps, PDF files embedded in a story are partially displayed, potentially restricting access to critical content and reducing clarity. The image below shows the embedded PDF displayed as an embedded card.

Cause

The PDF cannot be displayed as an interactive embed because the URL does not support inline embedding. Many external file hosting platforms, including Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive, either restrict iframe embedding or do not provide the required CORS headers, preventing StoryMaps from displaying the PDF inline.

Solution or Workaround

  1. Host the item in ArcGIS Online. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Add files as items for instructions.
Note:
Ensure the item is shared with everyone for public access.
  1. Copy the item URL from the item page. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Share an item page for instructions.
  2. In StoryMaps, open the story map's edit page. Click Add content block The Add content block icon  and select Embed The Embed icon under Media.
  3. In the Add web content window, on the Link tab, paste the copied URL and click Add.
  4. Click the Display this content as an interactive embed. You can choose how it displays on small screens in the options menu The Display this content as an interactive embed. You can choose how it displays on small screens in the options menu icon icon.
  5. Click Options to open the Embed options window to configure the appearance of the embedded PDF.

The embedded PDF below displays the unrestricted interactive content.
