PROBLEM

Layer visibility is not honored in the legend in an ArcGIS Pro layout

Last Published: September 19, 2023

Description

In ArcGIS Pro, changes made in a map are reflected on the legend in a layout. However, in some instances, the legend does not honor the layer visibility of the map. In this example, the Polygon layer is unchecked in the Contents pane but is displayed in the legend in the layout.

In the Contents pane, the Polygon layer is unchecked, however the Polygon layer is displayed in the legend in the layout.

Cause

The layer visibility is not synchronized.

Solution or Workaround

To resolve the issue, follow the workflow below to synchronize the layer visibility of the legend.

  1. In ArcGIS Pro, on the Layout tab, right-click the legend, and select Properties.
Access the Element pane by right-clicking the legend in the layout, and select Properties.
  1. In the Element pane, on the Legend tab, expand Synchronize with map, and check Layer visibility.
Enable layer visibility in the Element pane by expanding the 'Synchronize with map' section, and check 'Layer visibility'.

The layer visibility is synchronized. The unchecked layer in the Contents pane is not displayed in the legend.

The Polygon layer is unchecked in the Contents pane, and the legend does not display the Polygon layer.
