Large number of AEJava.exe processes on the Web server

Description

At ArcIMS 3, AEJava.exe processes may unexpectedly start up on the Web server, run for a couple of seconds, and then never shut down. If left unchecked, these AEJava.exe processes may overload and crash the Web server.

Cause

This problem occurs when a Windows 2000 client machine attempts to load the ArcIMS 3 Java Viewer without ArcExplorer Java 3 also present on the client machine. Windows 2000 is not a supported client platform for the Java Viewer at ArcIMS 3.

Solution or Workaround

• On the Web server, the only way to clear the unwanted AEJava.exe processes is to reboot the server.
• To prevent the problem from occurring again, install ArcExplorer 3 on the Windows 2000 client. ArcExplorer 3 is available on the ArcIMS 3 Installation CD.
