PROBLEM

Intermittent operation of Portal for ArcGIS services after Windows reboot

Last Published: February 28, 2024

Description

After a machine restarts due to a Windows reboot, Portal for ArcGIS encounters intermittent service interruptions, resulting in unexpected starts and stops. These disruptions affect access and functionality. If the issue persists despite checking folder permissions, switching to a domain account, changing the local account password, and performing software repairs, refer to the steps outlined in this article.

Cause

The PostgreSQL database is not running. Portal for ArcGIS relies on a PostgreSQL database to store its configuration, content, and user information. PostgreSQL is the underlying database management system used by Portal for ArcGIS to manage and store data related to the portal's operation. When Portal for ArcGIS is installed, it includes a PostgreSQL instance configured to work specifically with the portal.

Solution or Workaround

  1. On the local machine, in File Explorer, navigate to the PostgreSQL application, which by default is:
C:\arcgisportal\pgsql_14.5\bin
  1. Right-click postgres and select Run as administrator. If prompted, click Yes in the User Account Control window.
  2. On the Windows taskbar, search for and select Task Manager.
  3. In the Task Manager window, search for and ensure the PostgreSQL Server services are running.
