Federated servers are not listed in the Hosting Server drop-down list when specifying a hosting server for the portal

Description

When attempting to specify a hosting server for the portal, the federated server is either not listed or is inactive in the Hosting Server drop-down list in the Portal for ArcGIS Servers settings page.

Cause

• The portal does not trust the server's SSL certificate.
• ArcGIS Server is not using a relational data store as the server's managed database. Refer to Portal for ArcGIS: Federate an ArcGIS Server site with your portal for more information.
• The server's host name is restricted in the Portal for ArcGIS internal proxy.
• The Basic edition of ArcGIS GIS Server cannot be federated with a portal and cannot be used as a hosting server. Refer to ArcGIS Server: Functionality for more information.

Solution or Workaround

Depending on the cause, use either one of the following solutions.

Configure the portal to trust the server's SSL certificate

Establish trust between ArcGIS Server and Portal for ArcGIS by importing the ArcGIS Server's internal SSL certificate into Portal for ArcGIS. Refer to Portal for ArcGIS: Import a certificate into the portal for steps and more information.

Configure ArcGIS Server with a relational data store

To be a hosting server, the server must only use a relational data store as the server's managed database. Refer to Portal for ArcGIS: An overview of ArcGIS Data Store configuration for steps to configure a relational data store as the server's managed database.

Define the server's host name as an approved web address in the portal's internal proxy

Add the federated server's host name to the AllowedProxyHosts list in the Portal for ArcGIS security configuration settings. Refer to Portal for ArcGIS: Restrict the portal's proxy capability for steps and more information.
