PROBLEM

Feature layer name renamed in an ArcGIS Online web map is not reflected in the map legend in ArcGIS StoryMaps

Last Published: September 2, 2022

Description

When renaming a feature layer in a web map in ArcGIS Online, the changes are not reflected in the map, and consequently, in the legend in ArcGIS StoryMaps.

Renaming a feature layer and displaying the changes in the map legend in a story may be necessary to enable a user-friendly interface for easier navigation and data interpretation.

Cause

This is by design. This behavior is implemented to prevent changes made to a web map from affecting the ArcGIS StoryMaps story.

Solution or Workaround

The following is a workaround to rename the feature layer in the map legend in ArcGIS StoryMaps.

  1. In the story builder, hover over the map to display the toolbar panel at the top and click the Edit button.

  1. In the Adjust map appearance window, on the Layers tab, click the feature layer name to rename the layer. In this example, the 'Schools_all' layer is selected and renamed as 'Schools' (image on the right).
