Exporting a map or layout in ArcGIS Pro displays turned-off layers in the output file

Description

In ArcGIS Pro, when exporting a map or layout containing KML or KMZ data to other file types, such as PDF, JPEG, PNG, or TIFF, turned-off layers are visible in the output file. In this example, all the KML layers except LAKE CATHERINE GeoLines are turned-off, displaying only the GeoLines layer on the map.

The image below demonstrates all the layers, including the turned-off layers, remain visible in the exported PDF file.

Cause

This is a limitation when exporting a map or layout containing KML or KMZ files.

Solution or Workaround

As a workaround, convert the KML or KMZ files to geodatabase feature classes using the KML To Layer tool, and use the output feature classes in the map or layout to export.

1. In the Geoprocessing pane, search for and open the KML To Layer tool.
   1. For Input KML File, select the KML or KMZ file.
   2. For Output Location, select a folder to locate the output geodatabase.
   3. For Output Data Name, set a name for the output data.

4. Click Run. The output data is added to the Contents pane and on the map. In this example, the output contains three layers: Points, Polylines, and Polygons. The output data is dependent on the original features of the KML or KMZ file.

2. In the Contents pane, remove or turn-off the original KML or KMZ files.
3. Turn-off the new layers as desired, and leave the other layers turned-on to be displayed in the exported file. In this example, only the Polylines layer is turned-on.

4. Export the map, or create a layout and export the layout.
