ESRI Geometric Symbols font not displaying correctly in ArcExplorer-Java and Java Viewer

Description

The "ESRI Geometric Symbols" font does not appear correctly when the map is opened as a local project or displayed as a MapService. Instead of the expected "ESRI Geometric Symbols" character, a character from the "Wing Dings" font set is displayed. This problem occurs even if the "ESRI Geometric Symbols" font is installed correctly on the machine.

Cause

This is a known problem in certain 1.3.x versions of the Sun Java Developer Kit (JDK) and Java Run Time Environment (JRE) when attempting to render this font.
