In either ArcMap or ArcCatalog, ArcIMS mapservices fail to display or preview even though successful connections to those mapservices can be made.
Cause
There is a possible incompatibility with the existing version of msxml.dll.
Solution or Workaround
Follow these steps to reregister and update msxml.dll.

1. Open a DOS command prompt
2. At the command prompt, change to the Winnt\System32 directory containing msxml.dll
3. Register and update the file with

Note:
In Windows Explorer, browse to msxml.dll and right-click it. Go to Properties > Version. It should now be version 8.0.5226.0
