This issue arises when values in specific registry keys become invalid or corrupted.

Solution or Workaround

The instructions below include making changes to essential parts of your operating system. It is recommended that you backup your operating system and files, including the registry, before proceeding. Consult with a qualified computer systems professional, if necessary.

Esri cannot guarantee results from incorrect modifications while following these instructions; therefore, use caution and proceed at your own risk.
  1. Open the Registry Editor either by clicking Start > Run and typing in 'regedit' or by typing 'regedit' in the Windows Search.
  2. For ArcGIS 10.x: navigate to HKEY_Current_User\Software\ESRI\Desktop10.x\ArcMap - where 'x' is the version in use.
    For ArcGIS 9.1 - 9.3.1: navigate to HKEY_Current_User\Software\ESRI\ArcMap
  3. Right-click the registry key 'PropertySheets' and rename it to PropertySheetsOld.
Renaming the key regenerates a new key with default values that should resolve the issue. If any problems arise, it is possible rename the key back to PropertySheets to recover the old data.
