PROBLEM

Curved lines behave unexpectedly when using the Traverse tool in ArcGIS Pro

Last Published: July 4, 2024

Description

In ArcGIS Pro, a traverse is a sequence of lines that is defined by entering a set of dimensions and coordinates using the Traverse tool. Straight lines are entered using a bearing and distance, and curved lines are entered using curve parameters such as tangent bearing, radius, arc length, chord, chord bearing, and delta. However, when multiple users are using the Traverse tool to create a traverse, the curved lines may behave unexpectedly, diverging in different directions. In this example, the curved lines diverge differently in tangent and chord directions when using the Traverse tool in ArcGIS Pro.

The curved lines diverge differently in tangent and chord directions when using the Traverse tool

Cause

This is expected behavior. The selected curve parameters for the Direction field are inconsistent. Thus, using both tangent and chord direction types results in curved lines diverging in different directions when created by multiple users.

Solution or Workaround

To solve this issue, use the same curve parameters for the Direction field. This approach ensures consistency and helps resolve unexpected behavior with curved lines in the Traverse tool. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Enter a traverse for more information.

Optionally, shortcuts can be used to override curve parameters in the Direction field instead of clicking the drop-down menu to set the default curve parameters. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Curve overrides for more information.
