PROBLEM

Creating an address locator with a multipoint feature class crashes ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

In some instances, creating an address locator with a multipoint feature class as the reference data using the Create Address Locator tool in ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro crashes the software.

Cause

The issue occurs because there are multiple points associated to a single address or object ID. So the address locator is unable to identify which point is the correct reference. This creates a conflict for the address locator to find addresses.

Solution or Workaround

To circumvent the issue in ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro, convert the multipoint feature class to a single-point feature class using the Multipart To Singlepart tool. For more information, refer to the solution section of the article Problem: The Intersect tool generates a multipoint feature class for how to use the Multipart To Singlepart tool. When the features are converted to single-points, create the address locator using the new single-point feature class as the reference data.

The image below shows an address locator created using the new single-point feature class as the reference data.
