PROBLEM

Convert Labels To Graphics renders slowly in ArcGIS Pro

Last Published: February 10, 2025

Description

When attempting to run the Convert Labels To Graphics tool in ArcGIS Pro, the process is significantly slower than expected. Some cases report the tool's extended render time and the tool failing without returning an error message or producing any output.

The Convert Labels To Graphics tool processes each label individually, converting the label into graphic elements on the map. This operation consumes substantial system resources, particularly when handling complex symbology, large datasets, or multiple layers within the project.

Cause

  • The presence of too many layers in the project causes the tool to render slowly in ArcGIS Pro, as it requires more system resources to process and display each layer.
  • Slow connections can be expected when the data stored on the network drive are not properly synced, leading to delays in accessing data and impacting overall performance.
  • Excessive cache data are accumulated over time, consuming valuable system resources and slowing down ArcGIS Pro operations.

Solution or Workaround

Reduce the number of layers in the ArcGIS Pro project

To improve performance, remove unnecessary layers from the project. To remove the layer, right-click the layer in the Contents pane and click Remove. Additionally, removing any redundant maps or layouts from the project can further optimize processing and enhance overall performance. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Remove or delete project items for more information.

Alternatively, create a new project and add only the preferred layers. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Create a project and ArcGIS Pro: Add layers to a map or scene for instructions to create a project and add layers to the ArcGIS Pro project.

Save the data on the local drive

Slow performance can occur when working with data stored on the network drive, especially if they fail to sync properly between the local machine and network storage. This results in delays in file access, slow rendering times, and potential data integrity issues if recent changes are not consistently reflected across all devices. To optimize performance in ArcGIS Pro, store the data on the local drive. Refer to How To: Export a feature service to a file geodatabase feature class in ArcGIS Pro for instructions.

Use the Clear Workspace Cache tool to clear the cache in ArcGIS Pro

ArcGIS Pro uses workspace caching to enhance performance during the operation of script tools and repeated processes. Over time, cached data are accumulated; impacting performance. Use the Clear Workspace Cache tool to remove temporary cache files and optimize performance. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Clear Workspace Cache (Data Management) for more information.

  1. Open the ArcGIS Pro project.
  2. On the Analysis tab, in the Geoprocessing group, click Tools.
  3. In the Geoprocessing pane, search for and select Clear Workspace Cache (Data Management Tools).
  4. Configure the parameters in the Clear Workspace Cache pane.
    1. For Input Workspace, select the feature layer from the drop-down menu.
    2. Click Run.

Likewise, caches for specific layers can be cleared and managed to improve performance in ArcGIS Pro. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Cache options with feature layers for instructions.

Note:
Alternatively, in the Options dialog box, on the Display option tab, check the Clear cache each time the application closes check box under Local cache. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Access project and application options for more information. This ensures the workspace cache is cleared every time ArcGIS Pro is closed, improving performance on subsequent sessions.
