CAD to Geodatabase does not import version 8 Microstation DGN files

Description

The CAD to Geodatabase tool in ArcToolbox produces an empty feature dataset in the output geodatabase.

Cause

The version 8 DGN file selected as input for the tool has not been compressed in Microstation v8 or Microstation v8 XM.

Solution or Workaround

To compress the v8 DGN file in Microstation, click File > Compress > Design. After the file is compressed, save the file again.

In Microstation v8 XM, the file can be compressed automatically on SAVE. Go to Workspace > Preferences > Category list. Select Operation, and check the box labeled "Compress File On Exit". The files are compressed during the SAVE process.
