Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

When creating a buffer around point features in ArcGIS Pro, the buffer features appear oval instead of circular.

Buffer seems oval

Cause

The map data frame is set to a geographic coordinate system (GCS).

Solution or Workaround

Change the coordinate system of the map data frame to a projected coordinate system (PCS).

  1. In the Contents pane, right-click the map data frame layer > Properties.
  2. In the Map Properties window, click Coordinate System on the left pane.
  3. In the XY Coordinate Systems Available section, expand Projected coordinate system.

Click Coordinate Systems on the left pane, and select a PCS under the XY Coordinate Systems Available section.

  4. Select the appropriate projected coordinate system, and click OK. The buffer features in the map appear circular.

    The buffer features appear round.
