PROBLEM

Auto-Complete Polygon tool fails to create a new feature

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

Sometimes, when using the Auto-Complete Polygon tool in ArcMap to create a new polygon feature next to existing polygons, the feature is not created. The image below shows the line constructed from one end to another of a void polygon to create a new polygon using the Auto-Complete tool. However, the new polygon feature is not created.

The edges of the existing polygon exceeding the map view extent

Cause

The feature to be created by the Auto-Complete Polygon tool exceeds the edges of the map view extent as shown in the image above. The Auto-Complete Polygon tool only creates a new polygon when the polygon features are in the visible extent in ArcMap.

Solution or Workaround

When using the Auto-Complete Polygon tool to create a new polygon feature, pan or zoom the map until all the edges of the existing polygons are visible in the map extent view. The image below shows the new polygon feature created. The void is closed with the new polygon feature when the edges of the existing polygon feature is panned to the current map extent.
