PROBLEM

ArcMap is unable to recognize a join field in a table

Last Published: February 18, 2021

Description

Attempts to join a field in ArcMap fail, as ArcMap is unable to recognize the join field from both the feature attribute table and the join table.

Cause

The data types of the join fields do not match. For example, a numeric data type and a float data type cannot be joined as the data types of the fields are not the same. This is by design, as ArcMap does not allow two different field data types to be joined.

Solution or Workaround

Change the field data type of the join field by creating a new field in the feature's attribute table, and use the Field Calculator to insert the values into the new field. For steps to do this, refer to the article: How To: Change the data type of an existing field.
