ArcMap crashes unexpectedly when working with files from Microsoft Access or Microsoft Excel.

Cause

The compatibility files, such as DLL registration files, used to read files from Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel are missing or corrupt. This happens when Microsoft Office is upgraded to a newer version, and the compatibility components from the previous instance are either removed or corrupted.

Solution or Workaround

To resolve this issue, download and install Microsoft Access Database Engine 2016 Redistributable for Microsoft Office 2016 or later.
