BUG

ArcMap crashes when adding basemaps or accelerated raster layers

Last Published: April 24, 2024

Description

ArcMap crashes when adding a basemap or accelerated raster layer with hardware acceleration turned on.

Cause

This problem can occur when ArcMap attempts to access the GPU to render basemap layers, and the GPU driver is out of date, corrupted, or otherwise compromised.

If performing the below workaround resolves the behavior, consider updating the GPU drivers from the manufacturer (e.g. Nvidia, AMD, Intel, or from the manufacturer of the computer/laptop) to resolve the issue and allow hardware acceleration to be used for basemap layers or accelerated raster layers.

Workaround

Perform the following steps to turn off hardware acceleration.

  1. Go to Customize > ArcMap Options, and navigate to the Data View tab.
  2. Uncheck the check box for Enable hardware acceleration for supported layers, and click OK.

Note:
The first time a basemap or raster layer is added to the map session (for example, adding a basemap from ArcGIS Online,) a prompt requesting to enable hardware acceleration is displayed.

Ensure the check box for Don’t show this Dialog again is unchecked, and click No, so the prompt is not returned on adding such layers in subsequent ArcMap sessions.
