PROBLEM

ArcGIS Survey123 web submissions do not store polygon geometry

First Published: June 25, 2026

Description

In ArcGIS Survey123, when a survey is created from an existing polygon feature layer, users may encounter an issue in which polygon features captured via the web form are not stored in the survey results layer after submission. As a result, submitted records may appear without geometry, geometry-dependent fields such as area values may remain empty, and captured features may not display on the map as expected.

Polygon geometry not stored after the survey submission.

Cause

The map question used to capture the polygon geometry has the 'Do not store the answer' option enabled. When this setting is enabled, the geometry collected through the map question is not written to the survey results layer. As a result, the polygon is not stored or displayed, and any calculations or fields that depend on the geometry, such as area values, remain empty.

Solution or Workaround

Configure the map question to store polygon geometries

  1. Open the survey in Survey123.
  2. Select the map question used to capture the polygon geometry.
  3. In the Map panel, under Behavior, uncheck the Do not store the answer check box.
The Behavior settings in the Map panel
  1. Save and republish the survey.

The image below illustrates polygon geometries being transferred correctly to the underlying feature layer, with area-related fields populated as expected.
