Description

After installing ArcGIS Service Pack 4, ArcMap becomes unresponsive after five to ten minutes of idle time.

Cause

The cause is likely system-specific, and due to some third-party software, for example, XTools 8.1, TAB Reader 4, Compass 4.1, Layer Editor, GIS Quick Links, etc.

Solution or Workaround

Following installation of ArcGIS SP4, a Data Execution Prevention (DEP) exception must be added for ArcMap.exe, or DEP turned off.
