Nothing happens when running a Spatial Analyst function

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Nothing happens when clicking OK on the dialog box of a Spatial Analyst function.

The input grid name possibly contains Japanese characters with '7B' or '7D' in its tail byte. Japanese characters are represented with a double-byte character encoding scheme, with a lead byte and a tail byte. This is done to allow for the many thousands of Kanji characters.

In ASCII, '7B' and '7D' represent curly-bracket characters. ArcGIS seems to incorrectly treat the double byte characters as single byte, and convert the '7B' and '7D' characters of an input filename to the curly brackets. As result, no output raster is generated.

Solution or Workaround

Avoid using certain double-byte characters, particularly ‘7B’ or ‘7D’, in input file names with ArcGIS 8.1.
