Last Published: November 4, 2020

Error Message

The following error is returned when exporting a map as a JPEG, PNG, or TIFF file.

Error:
Not enough memory to create the requested bitmap.

[O-Image]

Cause

This error may occur due to one of the following reasons:

  • The dots per inch (DPI) value set is too high.
  • The map document or data frame is corrupt.
  • ArcMap is using connections from a disconnected printer.
Note:
It is highly recommended to use ArcGIS Pro for printing and exporting, especially when experiencing issues caused by the limitations of the ArcMap display engine. More specifically, ArcGIS Pro is not restricted by the graphical device interface (GDI) limitations that some users experience in ArcMap. For example, transparency is natively supported in ArcGIS Pro, preventing the rasterization of layers. Additionally, ArcGIS Pro supports transparency in layout elements.

Solution or Workaround

Decrease DPI
If the DPI value is too high, decrease the value of the DPI before exporting the map.

  1. In ArcMap, click File > Export Map.
  2. In the Export Map window, click the General tab in the Options section.
  3. Decrease the DPI value by typing the value.

[O-Image]

  1. Click Save.

Create a new map document
Create a new map document, and add the layers from the Catalog window into the new map document.
Change the Printer
Change the printer in in Page and Print Setup.
