PROBLEM

Network Analyst: Map documents containing network analysis layers are large

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

Map documents containing network analysis layers can be extremely large in size. When the documents are large, they may take a long time to open and save.

Cause

Network analysis layers contain the input and output features used during analysis. When saved to layer files or to map documents, these features are saved within the file. A couple things contribute to the size of the file:

- The number of features in the analysis layer directly affects the size.
- Saving the document multiple times can increase the size of the document due to file fragmentation. Click here for more information on this issue.

Solution or Workaround

If you do not need to save the analysis inputs such as stops, facilities, barriers and so forth or the analysis results like routes and service area lines, you can delete these features prior to saving the document.

To reduce the amount of file fragmentation, use Save As to save the document as a new file.
