Last Published: April 25, 2020

Error Message

When starting editing on a shapefile, the following error occurs:

Error:
MSEEK no space left on device

Cause

ArcView is attempting to write to a directory that is full.

Solution or Workaround

  1. Check to see if there is available space on the hard disk. To do so, open up a UNIX prompt, and type in the command, df -k. This returns the total and available disk space in kilobytes (KB).
  2. If the Working Directory in Project Properties is set to $HOME, try setting to another path. To do so, open the .cshrc file in a text editor, and edit the value of the PATH variable. It is also possible to set it manually at the UNIX prompt for the duration of a given command window by typing:
set PATH = ( value_of_variable )
