ERROR

MobileServer requires a custom extent to be set. The default extent is not acceptable (union of all layers)

Error Message

When publishing an ArcGIS Mobile project using ArcGIS Server with Mobile Data Access checked, the following error is returned:

"ArcGIS Server:
Configuration <name>.MapServer can not be started.
Server Object instance creation failed on machine <servername>."

Also, the following error is logged in the server log files:

"MobileServer requires a custom extent to be set. The default extent is not acceptable (union of all layers)."

Cause

Custom extents are required by ArcGIS Mobile 10.

Solution or Workaround

Enable the custom extent in the map document.

  1. In the MXD, right-click Layers and select Properties > Data Frame.
  2. In 'Extent Used By Full Extent Command', select Other: Specify Extent.
  3. Select the 'Custom Extent' button.
  4. Save the map and restart the service.
