PROBLEM

Microsoft Virtual Earth or Bing Maps layers do not display in published map documents or PMFs

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

In ArcMap documents, Microsoft Virtual Earth or Bing Maps layers do not display in published map documents or PMFs when viewed in ArcReader.

Cause

Microsoft Virtual Earth or Bing Maps layers are not supported in PMFs. The license for Bing Maps, which was formerly known as Microsoft Virtual Earth, is only for ArcMap for that particular machine.

When a map contains a Microsoft Virtual Earth or Bing Maps layer, the following error is displayed when the map document is published:

"One or more layers in the map do not support publishing. These layers were removed from the published map. Use the Map Summary dialog to determine which layers do not support publishing."

Solution or Workaround

Remove the Microsoft Virtual Earth or Bing Maps layer(s). Use either local raster data or a different service layer that does not have the same license restrictions.
