ERROR Address already in use

Error Message

When starting the ArcGIS or ArcIMS Java Web Manager application, the following error enters the manager logfile:

" Address already in use"


By default, the ArcGIS and ArcIMS Java Web Manager applications use the following ports:

ArcIMS Web Manager: 8098
ArcIMS Web Applications Server: 8398
ArcGIS Web Manager: 8099
ArcGIS Web Applications Server: 8399

If any of these ports are already being used by another application, this error occurs.

Solution or Workaround

On Windows, open a command prompt and run the command "netstat -a" to list the ports being used. If any of the ports listed above are being used by another service or application do one of the following:

  • Option 1:

    A. Close the application or service that is using the same port number.
    B. Select and use another available port. Some port changes may require admin privileges.
    C. Re-start the ArcIMS/ArcGIS Web Manager.
  • Option 2:

    Change the port number used by the ArcIMS/ArcGIS Web Manager.
