PROBLEM

Italic or Bold font property is not retained when exported to PDF

Last Published: June 26, 2023

Description

After assigning an Italic or Bold property to a font in ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro, the text does not retain that property in the output PDF.  This applies to any language or alphabet, either Western or UTF-8.

Cause

Assigning a property of Italic or Bold to a standard font only changes the appearance of the text string in the application.  That process does not actually create an Italic or Bold version of the selected font, but simply applies that appearance to the font in the map document.

Solution or Workaround

When exporting the map document to PDF, if text strings in the map are to be displayed as Italic or Bold, a true Italic or Bold font must be used to create the text string initially.  The output strings in the PDF will then appear with the expected property.
