Frequently asked question

Is it possible to add a desktop shortcut for PythonWin after installation?

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Answer

After installing PythonWin, there is no shortcut installed to launch it.
It is possible to manually add a shortcut to the desktop or start menu by way of the Operating System.

For example (on Windows XP), to create a shortcut at Start > All Programs > ArcGIS > Python 2.6, first open Windows Explorer and navigate to:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\ArcGIS\Python 2.6.

In the Python 2.6 folder, right-click > New > Shortcut. Create a shortcut to the PythonWin executable, which, by default, is located at:
C:\Python26\ArcGIS9.4\Lib\site-packages\pythonwin\Pythonwin.exe

For more information on creating shortcuts, consult the Operating System's help documentation.
