In ArcGIS Pro, when switching an active portal to ArcGIS Online, a certificate matching error is received
Error Message
After an ArcGIS Enterprise domain migration, users may receive a certificate warning in ArcGIS Pro when switching their active portal from ArcGIS Enterprise to ArcGIS Online. The message is similar to the following:
"The certificate you are viewing does not match the name of the site you are trying to view. A secure connection with this site cannot be verified."
This behavior can occur even when the ArcGIS Online connection itself is valid, causing confusion for users attempting to sign in or switch portals.
Cause
The issue can occur when ArcGIS Online organization settings contain references to resources that still point to a previous ArcGIS Enterprise domain.
Common examples include custom basemap configurations, logos, or other organization resources that reference URLs from the retired environment. When ArcGIS Pro retrieves organization information while switching portals, it may attempt to access these outdated URLs. If the old domain is no longer valid or presents a certificate that does not match the expected hostname, ArcGIS Pro may display a certificate warning.
Solution or Workaround
Review the ArcGIS Online organization settings and identify any resources that reference the previous ArcGIS Enterprise domain. To better help, use Fiddler when switching the Portals in ArcGIS Pro, and find the call that is made to get information about the user's ArcGIS Online setup, things like basemap configuration, utilities, etc. This corresponds to administration page in ArcGIS Online > Organization > Settings. Copy/paste this link to view the JSON, and use Command+F (or CTRL+F) to look for any ties to the old domain.
Update any outdated URLs, including basemap and logo resources, to reference the current ArcGIS Enterprise domain. After the changes have been made, retest the portal-switching workflow in ArcGIS Pro. Once all the old domain references have been removed, ArcGIS Pro should be able to verify the connection correctly and the certificate warning should no longer occur.
