HOW TO

Import Nearmap imagery services for use as custom basemaps in ArcGIS Online and mobile apps

Last Published: September 16, 2020

Summary

Nearmap Vertical Imagery services can be imported to ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS organizations in various ways:

  • Shared with your organization's Groups from the Marketplace portal
  • Imported as an OGC service by generating a service URL (with API key) from the Nearmap portal
  • Imported as an ArcGIS Server Service with Service URL and credentials

Limitations / Use-cases

For Option 1
Sharing settings for the imagery service are restricted to the layer and the Groups that it is shared with from the Marketplace portal. If this basemap is incorporated into Web Maps, for example, for use in Collector for ArcGIS, any users other than the data owner are prompted for log-in credentials and their ArcGIS Online credentials do not work because the service is not hosted in ArcGIS Online.

For Option 2
Generating and using the Nearmap service URL with a personal API Key allows for the content to be shared throughout your organization, as well as publicly. If there are public-facing web applications, the audience can see the Nearmap imagery displayed, without being prompted for credentials.
Be wary that those with access to the service URL can use it as they please.

For Option 3
When accessing a Nearmap image service in Portal using an ArcGIS Server service URL, it is possible to store credentials with the service or prompt users to enter their own to access the service. This maybe a helpful security measure within the organization.

Procedure

Sharing from the Marketplace portal

  1. Choose your Nearmap image service product from the list of content.
  2. Choose to Share it.
  3. Select which groups within the organization to share it with.

Generating a service URL and API key from the Nearmap portal and adding OGC services

  1. At the API Access tab of the Nearmap portal, designate applications for our API and name them for future reference.
  1. Choose whether to generate an API key for the application.
  1. Choose whether to generate a service URL and copy it then and there.

Import Nearmap image service using ArcGIS Server URL

  1. Go to Content > Add Item > From Web.
  2. Choose ArcGIS Server web service.
  3. Enter the service URL for the Nearmap image service.
  4. Enter your log in credentials to ensure permissions to this service and choose whether to store the credentials, or prompt users when they are accessing the service, as shown in the following image.
