Error Message

When attempting to access a Web mapping service through a browser, the following error occurs:

"HTTP Status 405 - HTTP method GET is not supported by this URL"

Cause

The specified HTTP method is not allowed for the requested resource. The map service endpoint is being accessed by a Web browser instead of a GIS Service client.

Solution or Workaround

A map service SOAP endpoint is not directly accessible via a browser at the address: https://servername:8399/arcgis/services/servicename/mapserver.

A supported GIS client, such as ArcGIS Desktop or ArcGIS Explorer, is required to work with a Web mapping application locally on a machine. To work with a map service through a browser, a Web mapping application may be used as a client.
