HOW TO
Instructions provided describe how to select the appropriate ArcMap PDF settings in ArcGIS Desktop 9.0 so that the output is the same or similar to ArcGIS 8.3. The exporters in ArcMap for ArcGIS 9.0 have been re-engineered and many new options were added; however, users may want to produce PDF's in ArcGIS Desktop 9.0 that are as similar to 8.3 PDF's as possible.
Note:
Prior to ArcGIS 9.0 Service Pack 2, it is required that the Output Image Quality setting on the Print dialog box be set to Normal as well.

Note:
If any PDF utilities are being used, that merge or manipulate PDF files, leave Compress Vector Graphics off. There is currently a known issue with ArcMap 9.0 compressed vector graphic PDF files reporting their stream length in those applications.
However, PDF viewer programs such as, Adobe Acrobat, Illustrator, and GhostScript GSView have no problem opening and editing single ArcMap 9.0's compressed vector graphic PDF's.
Note:
There will still be some differences, especially with text. ArcMap Desktop 9.0 exporters handle fonts differently; they preserve TrueType fonts such as, Arial, in the PDF document, instead of mapping TrueType Arial to Type1 Helvetica, as was done in 8.3.
Note:
For more information, refer to pages 18 and 62-63 of the "Whats_New_In_ArcGIS_Desktop_90" document in the \arcgis\Documentation folder in the ArcGIS Desktop install location. It includes details about the enhancements to font support and a general overview of the changes to ArcMap export formats in version 9.0.
