Select polygon features based on ZIP codes in ArcGIS Pro

Summary

In ArcGIS Pro, features can be selected by location based on the spatial relationship of the features within the layer. To select polygon features based on ZIP codes, convert the list of ZIP codes to locations on a map to enable the spatial analysis. The map below shows the counties in California displayed in polygons.

The counties in California, USA are symbolized on the map by yellow polygons outlined in black.

This article provides the workflow to select polygon features based on a list of ZIP codes in California.

Procedure

  1. In ArcGIS Pro, add the ZIP codes data to the project. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Add a stand-alone table to a map or scene for more information.
  2. In the Contents pane, right-click the stand-alone table, and click Geocode Table.
Open the Geocode Table tool by right-clicking the standalone table in the Contents pane, and select Geocode Table in the list.
  1. In the Geocode Table pane, click Go to Tool.
Access the Geocode Table tool by navigating to the bottom-left of the pane, and click Go to Tool.
  1. For Input Locator, click the drop-down arrow To display the drop-down list, click the drop-down arrow button at the right side of the box., or Browse The Browse button is symbolized by a folder icon. to select an input locator. In this example, ArcGIS World Geocoding Service is selected.
Note: 
Using ArcGIS World Geocoding Service consumes credits. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Geocoding tools for more information.
  1. For Input Address Fields, click the drop-down arrow, and select Single Field.
  2. For Single Line Input, click the drop-down arrow, and select the field containing the ZIP codes. In this example, the field is SampleofZIP.
  3. Click Run.
In the Geocode Table tool pane, click the drop-down arrow or the Browse button to select the input for Input Locator, Input Address Fields, and Single Line Input. Click the Run button at the bottom-right side of the tool pane to run the tool.
  1. Click No to close the Geocoding Completed dialog box. The ZIP codes are now displayed on the map.
The geocode result and details are included in the Geocoding Completed dialog box. There is an option to start a rematch process. Click No to close the dialog box.
On the map, the counties in California are symbolized by yellow polygons outlined in black, and the ZIP codes from the list are now geocoded and symbolized by red circles.
  1. On the ArcGIS Pro ribbon, on the Map tab, click Select By Location.
Access the Select By Location tool by navigating to the Map tab on top of the ArcGIS Pro window, and in the Selection group, click Select By Location.
  1. Fill in the parameters in the Select By Location pane.
    1. For Input Features, click the drop-down arrow, and select the polygon feature layer. In this example, the polygon layer is Counties.
    2. For Relationship, click the drop-down arrow, and select Intersect.
    3. For Selecting Features, click the drop-down arrow, and select the geocode output layer.
    4. Click OK.
The Select By Location pane shows sections available to run the tool. Click the drop-down arrow, or the Browse button next to the boxes to select from the list of options. To run and close the tool, click OK on the bottom-right of the pane.

The polygons containing the ZIP code addresses are selected on the map shown below.

The counties in California, USA are symbolized by yellow polygons outlined in black, and the ZIP codes from the list are now geocoded and symbolized by red circles. Polygons intersecting with the ZIP codes are selected, represented with cyan color lines along the polygons.
