Rename the Map Viewer default New Feature title in the Enterprise portal and ArcGIS Online

Summary

In Map Viewer in the ArcGIS Enterprise portal and ArcGIS Online, a default title is assigned when a new hosted feature layer is created without specifying a field. This default behavior ensures consistent labeling for new features but requires manual renaming for clarity in specific workflows. The 'Create features' section in the Editor pane displays this title as 'New Feature', as shown in the image below.

This article provides two workflows to rename the default New Feature title in the ArcGIS Enterprise portal and ArcGIS Online.

Procedure

Rename the default new feature in Map Viewer Classic

1. Refer to Steps 1 through 6 in Portal for ArcGIS: Create feature templates in Map Viewer Classic or ArcGIS Online: Create feature templates in Map Viewer Classic for instructions to open the hosted feature layer in Map Viewer Classic.
2. In the Manage New Features pane, for the feature template, click the drop-down button and select Properties.

3. In the Properties window, rename the feature template in the Name: section. In this example, the name is 'Houses in Mississippi'.
4. Click DONE.

5. In the Manage New Features pane, click SAVE CHANGES.

6. Refresh the web map and observe the edits are reflected.

Note:
Map Viewer Classic will be retired in 2025 in both the ArcGIS Enterprise portal and ArcGIS Online. Refer to Deprecation: Map Viewer Classic Deprecation for more information.

Rename the default new feature in the ArcGIS Field Maps Designer web app

1. Navigate to ArcGIS Field Maps Designer from ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise portal.
2. Refer to Steps 1 through 3 in ArcGIS Field Maps: Update the name and description to rename the default new feature.
3. Refresh the web map and observe the change reflected.
