HOW TO

Publish composite locators with the ArcGIS World Geocoding Service in ArcGIS Enterprise

Last Published: July 18, 2024

Summary

Composite locators consist of one or more locators or geocode services used to geocode addresses against multiple sources simultaneously. Incorporating the ArcGIS World Geocoding Service in a composite locator yields better results, as the service provides rich and high-quality point and street address data, places, and gazetteers covering much of the world. These composite locators can be published as services to share the locators with members of an organization.

In ArcGIS Enterprise, a server connection to the portal is required when publishing composite locators containing the ArcGIS World Geocoding Service. This article describes the workflow to publish composite locators with the ArcGIS World Geocoding Service in ArcGIS Enterprise.

Procedure

  1. Open the ArcGIS Pro project.
  2. Connect to and set the ArcGIS Enterprise portal as the active portal. Refer to Portal for ArcGIS: Add your portal to ArcGIS Pro and make it active for instructions.
  3. Create an ArcGIS Server connection.
    1. On the Insert tab, in the Project group, click Connections > Server > New ArcGIS Server.
    2. In the Add ArcGIS Server Connection dialog box, enter the following URL in the Server URL text box:
https://geocode.arcgis.com/arcgis
  1. Click OK to add the server connection.
  2. Add the geocoding service from the connection to the project.
    1. Refresh the Catalog pane.
    2. In the Catalog pane, right-click Locators and click Add Locator.
    3. In the Select Existing Locator dialog box, click Servers > arcgis on geocode.arcgis.com.ags > World > OK.
  3. Create a composite locator using the Create Composite Address Locator tool.
    1. In the Geoprocessing pane, search for and select Create Composite Address Locator (Geocoding Tools).
    2. For Address Locators, add all the desired locators including World to create the composite locator.
    3. Configure the Field Map and Selection criteria parameters as necessary. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Create Composite Address Locator (Geocoding) for additional information.
    4. For Output Composite Address Locator, specify the name and location of the output composite locator.
    5. For Result Order, from the Select Result Order drop-down list, select an option to define the order in which the participating locators match addresses or places. In this example, addresses or places are matched using the SanFranciscoLocator locator first, followed by the World locator.
    6. Click Run.
The Create Composite Address Locator pane.
  1. Publish the composite locator as a service to the ArcGIS Enterprise portal.
    1. Refresh the Catalog pane.
