Summary
This article describes how to upload and publish a tile package (.tpkx) from ArcGIS Pro to ArcGIS Online so that it can be used as a hosted tile layer in Map Viewer.
Procedure
The first section explains how to convert the data to a .tpkx file in ArcGIS Pro. If the data is already a .tpkx file, skip to the Sharing the package section, below.
Converting the data to a .tpkx file
- Load the data into a map in ArcGIS Pro.
- On the top pane of the project, navigate to Analysis > Tools.
- Look up the Create Map Tile Package tool.
- For Input Map, choose Map.
- Ensure that the Package for ArcGIS Online | Bing Maps | Google Maps option is checked.
- Create a name for the Output File.
- Add any desired Summary or Tags, as shown in the next image.

- The tool will not run with any basemaps. Remove any basemaps included with the input map.
- Click Run to complete the tool. The new .tpkx file sappears in the Catalog pane under Folders, as shown in the next image.

Sharing the package
- On the top pane of the project, navigate to Analysis > Tools.
- Look up the Share Package tool.
- For the Input Package, choose the .tpkx file.
- Add any desired Summary or Tags.

- Run the tool and wait for it to complete. This tool publishes the package directly to ArcGIS Online.
- Navigate to your Content page in ArcGIS Online. Once the tool is completed in ArcGIS Pro, a new item is published as a Tile package (tpkx).

- View the Items Details page. On the top right, download the tile package. Save it somewhere that where you will remember for the next steps.
- Navigate back to the Content page. On the top left, click New Item.
- Drag and drop the file you downloaded in Step 7. When going through the steps of publishing this layer, make sure to publish a hosted layer instead of just the package.

- Add any desired Summary or Tags.
- Clicking Next publishes the service to ArcGIS Online. It may take some time to publish the tiles.

- Once the tiles publish, the new tile layer can be viewed in Map Viewer.
