Prepare a hosted tile layer from ArcGIS Online for use as a basemap layer in an ArcGIS Enterprise offline map

Summary

To use a hosted tile layer in ArcGIS Online within an offline map in ArcGIS Enterprise, the hosted tile layer must be added to Portal for ArcGIS as a tile service item with ArcGIS Online organizational credentials embedded.

By default, accessing a public ArcGIS Online hosted tile layer does not prompt the user for credentials.

However, when a public ArcGIS Online hosted tile layer is added to Portal for ArcGIS without credentials embedded, the service becomes unusable. This is because the offline map area generation process in Portal for ArcGIS runs the exportTiles operation on the tile service, and this process requires embedded credentials on all services it operates on to run successfully.

This article describes how to prepare an ArcGIS Online hosted tile layer for use as a basemap in an ArcGIS Enterprise offline map, by embedding the ArcGIS Online credentials into the service once it is added to Portal for ArcGIS.

Procedure

1. Add the hosted tile layer in ArcGIS Online to the Portal for ArcGIS home page.
   1. Log in to the Portal for ArcGIS home page.
   2. Click the Content tab.
   3. Under My Content, click New item. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Add a service or document from a URL for instructions.
2. Set up the service username and password in the ArcGIS Portal Directory.
   1. Log in to the ArcGIS Portal Directory page using the same user account in Step 1(a).
   2. In the ArcGIS Portal Directory page, scroll down to Related Resources and click User Content.
   3. Under User Content (<username>), find the tile service uploaded from Step 1 and click to expand.

4. Navigate to Supported Operations and click Update Item.

5. In the list of item properties, scroll to Service Username and Service Password.

6. Enter the username and password for the account of the owner of the hosted tile layer in ArcGIS Online.
7. Click Update Item at the bottom of the page.
