Summary
In some instances, picture markers are placed on line features as a label, symbology, feature, representation, or decoration in ArcGIS Pro. This is done by creating a new picture marker symbol layer for the line layer or creating point features along the line features. This article provides the instructions to place picture markers on line features in ArcGIS Pro.
Procedure
Follow one of the steps below for the desired outcome.
Add a new symbol layer to the line feature symbology
- Open the ArcGIS Pro project.
- In the Contents pane, right-click the line feature layer, and select Symbology.
- In the Symbology pane, on the Primary symbology tab, click the line symbol.
- Add a new marker symbol layer.
- In the Format Line Symbol pane, on the Properties tab, click the Structure tab.
- Expand Layers, click Add symbol layer, and select Marker layer from the drop-down list. The new marker symbol layer is added.
- Optionally, click the delete button on the existing stroke symbol layer to delete it.
- Configure the marker symbol layer.
- In the Format Line Symbol pane, on the Properties tab, on the Layers tab, select Picture marker from the drop-down list.
- Expand Appearance. Under Insert picture from, click File... to select the image. If necessary, adjust the Position, Rotation, Offset Distance, and Marker Placement.
- Click Apply.

Create point features along the line features
- Open the ArcGIS Pro project.
- Create point features along the line features. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Create points along multiple lines in ArcGIS Pro for further instructions.
- In the Contents pane, right-click the newly created point feature layer, and select Symbology.
- In the Symbology pane, on the Primary symbology tab, click the point symbol.
- Configure the marker symbol layer.
- In the Format Line Symbol pane, on the Properties tab, on the Layers tab, select Picture marker from the drop-down list.
- Expand Appearance. Under Insert picture from, click File... to select the image. If necessary, adjust the Position, Rotation, and Offset Distance.
- Click Apply.
